Another mistake is when you or a driver you hire is accident-prone. Let’s examine a fictitious scenario to see how that impacted one company.

The Misadventures of Slippery Pete: The Trucker Who Couldn’t Truck.

Handsome Golden Stuff, or HG for short, owned Golden Stuff Transportation LLC.  Handsome was an up in coming entrepreneur sponsored by his parents to make his way in the world. As a young lad, Handsome was interested in trucks.   One day, he vowed to start his own trucking company.

That day arrived when his parents gifted him $2 million to start any business he desired — naturally, trucking was the game he wanted to get into.

He started Golden Stuff Transportation LLC, paid cash for a brand new Peterbilt, and his first hire was Pete Crashman.

Meet Pete! Or, as most people knew him by his CB handle, “Slippery Pete.” It wasn’t just because he hailed from the notoriously icy state of Pennsylvania. It was because, well, let’s say, his ability to keep a truck on the road would prove to be about as steady as a bar of soap in a shower.

Pete wasn’t always in trucking. He used to sell whoopee cushions, rubber chickens, and other gag gifts at a novelty store in Pittsburgh. When asked why he got into trucking, he often replied, “I figured driving a truck couldn’t be much harder than blowing up a whoopee cushion!” A statement he’d regret later.

Pete’s first trip was transporting a load of inflatable bouncy houses for Golden Stuff Transportation LLC. It seemed like a perfect match for his jovial nature. That is until he took a sharp turn, sending a dozen bouncy houses flying onto the highway. The sight of inflatables bouncing across the I-80 was something motorists wouldn’t forget.

Thankfully, no one was injured except for a clown car (full of clowns, of course) that hilariously collided with one. It was like something straight out of a comedy sketch.

His second job, transporting a truckload of feathers, went similarly awry when he failed to secure the back doors properly. As Pete drove down the highway, a massive plume of feathers erupted from his truck, creating a scene that looked like the world’s largest pillow fight.

Unfortunately for Pete, these fiascos were just the beginning. From forgetting to set the parking brake (resulting in a runaway truck) to accidentally mixing a shipment of chocolate syrup with live lobsters, Pete made every mistake in the trucking book.

His ever-so-supportive CB buddies didn’t let him forget it either:

“Hey, Slippery Pete, heard you’re hauling eggs next week. Need a side of bacon with that crash?”

Insurance companies soon became wary. Pete caused his employer Golden Stuff Transportation LLC, to lose its coverage after a mishap involving a truckload of roller skates and a steep hill, it was clear that the writing was on the wall.

And when a disgruntled customer, who had expected a shipment of wine but received grape juice instead (thanks to Pete’s bumpy ride), decided to sue, Pete found himself in a slippery situation with his employer HG.

Golden Stuff Transportation LLC soon went out of business. HG went to his parents for another $2 million investment after the first two million went down the drain because of Slippery Pete.

But, true to his nature, Pete took it all in stride. He returned to his novelty shop roots, selling miniature toy trucks with wobbly wheels and the tagline, “Drive like Slippery Pete!”

It was a hit! As it turns out, while Pete might not have been the world’s best truck driver, he certainly knew how to make people laugh.

Ultimately, Slippery Pete didn’t leave the world of trucking with a fleet or a fortune, but he did leave with a legacy – reminding everyone that sometimes life’s detours are where the real adventures begin.
